What to Expect During an OSHA Inspection — A Step-by-Step Guide

Safety People LLC·June 2, 2025·7 min read

An OSHA compliance officer arrives. What now?

Step 1 — Verify credentials. Politely ask for ID and the reason for the inspection (programmed, complaint, accident, referral).

Step 2 — Opening conference. The CSHO explains scope. You can request a brief delay to get the right people on site.

Step 3 — Walkaround. You have the right to accompany the inspector. Take parallel photos and notes of everything they document.

Step 4 — Employee interviews. Hourly employees can be interviewed privately. Management interviews can include a representative.

Step 5 — Closing conference. The CSHO will summarize potential violations. This is your chance to provide context and abatement plans.

Step 6 — Citations. You have 15 working days to contest. Don't miss the deadline.

Our team has accompanied clients on hundreds of inspections. Call us before the CSHO arrives, not after.
