5 Common Mistakes With Respirator Fit Testing

Safety People LLC·May 10, 2025·5 min read

Mistake 1 — Skipping the medical evaluation. Every respirator user must complete a medical questionnaire before fit testing. No exceptions.

Mistake 2 — Annual testing only. Fit testing is also required when facial features change (weight, dental work, scars) or when the make/model changes.

Mistake 3 — Beards. Facial hair that crosses the seal disqualifies a tight-fitting respirator. Loose-fitting PAPRs are the alternative.

Mistake 4 — Using one model for everyone. Faces are different — offer at least two brands and three sizes.

Mistake 5 — Lost paperwork. Fit test records must be kept until the next test. Digital tracking saves audits.
